Argentina Beats Colombia To Advance To Copa America Final

Argentina Beats Colombia to Advance to Copa América Final

The Albiceleste will face Brazil in Sunday’s final after a 3-2 penalty shootout win.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was the hero in the shootout, stopping three Colombian penalties. Lautaro Martínez scored the winning penalty for Argentina.

Lionel Messi assisted Ángel Di María for the opening goal in the 7th minute. Luis Díaz equalized for Colombia in the 61st minute from Lucas Martínez Quarta’s poor back pass that found its way to Díaz.

Argentina dominated possession and had more chances, but Colombia defended resolutely and frustrated the Albiceleste for much of the match.

The match was decided by a penalty shootout, and Argentina ultimately prevailed. This is Argentina's first Copa América final since 2016, when they lost to Chile on penalties.

Argentina will now face Brazil in the final on Sunday, July 10th. Brazil defeated Peru 1-0 in the other semifinal match.

This will be a rematch of the 2019 Copa América final, which Brazil won 2-0. Argentina will be looking to avenge that loss and win their first Copa América title since 1993.

Here are some additional highlights from the match:

  • Messi was named man of the match.
  • Colombia’s Juan Cuadrado was sent off in the 89th minute for a second yellow card.
  • This was the first time that Argentina and Colombia had faced each other in a penalty shootout at the Copa América.

Argentina will now have a few days to rest and prepare for the final. They will be hoping to win their first Copa América title in 28 years.

The Copa América is the oldest international football tournament in the world. It is held every four years and is contested by the national teams of South America.
